The bitter sweet part about living in the mitten state is the fact that spring is tantalizingly hung right in front of you with a beautiful week filled with sunny skies and 65F degree weather, just to be ripped from you on Sunday with a high of only 45F. So in order to cope with the rollercoaster we call weather, I’ve made a nice thick, hot, juicy venison and gravy out of Grandma Beverly’s recipe book!
When even Calvin doesn’t want to come outside!
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lbs of venison steak cut into 2″ cubes (any cut works, you can also use a different kind of meat if you’d like)
- 1 large onion chopped
- 2 large carrots chopped
- 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
- 1/4 Cup of water
- 1 can of mushroom stems/pieces
- 1 bag of onion soup mix
- 1 teaspoon of pepper
Instructions:
- If using an Instapot place your setting on sauté and brown the meat with a small amount of olive oil. Once browned pull out and set to the side. (If using a crock pot brown the meat in a skillet and then set to the side)
- Place the carrots, onion, and mushroom pieces now in the instapot and cover with the onion soup mix, stir and cook until the onions are sweaty.
- Place the meat back into the pot.
- Stir together the cream of mushroom soup, pepper, and water. Pour over the ingredients in the pot and mix until uniform.
- If you have an instapot, you are going to cook on high for 45 minutes with a 5 minute slow release. If you have a crock pot you can cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 8.
**I served with rice and I added some frozen green beans because I love veggies!* — This dish can be great with potatoes, or pasta as well.
Grandma B actually has “deer hunting meal” written on the top of this one. So this dip in the temperature was the perfect pairing for this recipe!
What I love about this recipe is how easy it is to make it your own. Whether you want to serve over rice, potatoes, noodles is completely up to you; but you also have the opportunity to add in more veggies like I did! Or you could even skip serving it over top of anything and make sandwiches. Plus, you all know by now I LOVE a recipe you can throw all together and forget about and there is no better day than a lazy Sunday to do that.
I would love to know how you guys made this your own! Leave me a comment, email, or smoke signal! I’ll leave the light on for you:)
