Grandma Bev’s Venison Hobo Supper

If you come from a household like mine every year come October/November you start collecting as many venison recipes as possible. To some girls nothing says fall like a pumpkin spice latte, to me nothing says fall like my freezer packed to the brim with my husband’s most recent deer!

I mean seriously guys! Look at this freezer!

Growing up I did not have much venison. It was not until I met my now husband (James) in high school that I was introduced to it. Now, every deer season for the last 4 years my husband has spoiled us with plenty of meat to last us for at least 5 months. So you can see why I was so excited to see grandma had venison recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 1lb of ground venison
  • 4 medium potatoes chopped
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 3 stalks of celery chopped
  • 2 large carrots chopped
  • 3/4 of a stick of butter
  • 1/4 cup of beef stock
  • 1 tsp of olive oil
  • 1 clove of minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp of flour (to make the rue)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Steak seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Brown the venison in a cast iron skillet with the olive oil, salt, pepper, paprika and steak seasoning, once browned remove meat from the skillet
  2. Add in the now empty skillet: butter, garlic and stock. This should bubble right away, when you see bubbles add the four and whisk quickly to thicken and form a rue
  3. Add carrots and potatoes to the skillet, cover and cook for 10 minutes while intermittently stirring
  4. Add the celery and onion to the skillet, cover and cook for another 10 minutes or until onions and celery are soft
  5. Add meat back into the skillet and mix all together
  6. Serve hot with buns and your choice of rice or noodles

Making this is SUPER simple. Its the perfect meal for a busy night when you don’t want to put too much effort into whatever you’re doing.

A few fun tips to make this simple recipe even better:

  • Noodles! – if you want to thicken the rue up just a bit more this becomes a super tasty almost gravy like consistency and with noodles? YUM!!
  • Have tons of left overs of this meal? (If you’re anything like my husband and I we aren’t very good at measuring out exactly 1lb bags lol) – this mix is perfect for pasty stuffing! Or if you love shepherd’s pie it’s also the perfect filling for that as well

This recipe was fun and simple, definitely something to keep the kitchen light on for.
